Mr. Square Palmer, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend was born in the town of Edwards, Mississippi on December 5, 1948. He was reared and nurtured by his parents, the late Square (Bullie) Palmer, Sr. and the late Millie T. Palmer.
He transitioned into eternity to be with the Lord on September 6, 2025 in the comfort of his home.
His early years were spent in Edwards, Mississippi, where he attended Edwards Junior High School. He graduated from Hinds County Agricultural High School in 1969. He completed studies at Utica Junior College, thus matriculating to Alcorn University. He graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education. He was so happy to participate in the Golden (50yr) Reunion held May, 2024 at Alcorn State University.
He furthered his study at Jackson State University in the area of Industrial Technology and Hazardous Waste Management. He became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. – Mu Sigma Chapter at Jackson State University. He also taught Special Industrial Technology Classes to the students in the Summer/Special Programs.
He owned and operated his company, S & P Contractor’s Service for many years in the areas of electrical, plumbing, HVAC and all other areas of construction. He served as Building Inspector for the town of Edwards under several Mayors.
He began employment with Jackson State University as an Electrical Foreman and Preventive Maintenance Supervisors before retiring in May, 2000.
On September 17, 1999, Square endured a tragic spinal cord injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident only a few miles from his home. The injury resulted in him being a paraplegic. This disability did not deter him; he continued to do construction, esp. electrical basis as a consultant.
He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Ms. Belinda Marshall on June 28, 1980. They were married forty-five (45) years, with the last twenty-six (26) years, his wife was his special caregiver.
He joined Mt. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Edwards, Mississippi before uniting with the Hill of Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Eddie Gibson. He was recently promoted as an “Elder” of the church by his present pastor, Pastor Virdell Lewis, Jr.
He is joined to live in eternal peace with both parents, three (3) brothers: Ivory, P.J. and Horice Palmer; a sister: Mary Lee Palmer; and a grandson: Jonathan Thomas, Jr. (JT).
He leaves to cherish many wonderful memories of love with his wife of forty-five (45) years: Belinda Palmer; two (2) daughters: Laketia Thomas (Jonathan, Sr.) and Lanecia Palmer; a grandson: Jonah Thomas, who he treated as his own son; three (3) brothers: John Palmer (Mamie) , Joe Palmer (Fern) and Abbie Johnson (Leslie); two (2) sisters: Millie Palmer White and Betty Ann Ramsey; three(3) sisters-in-laws: Louise Robinson, Lula Anderson and Daphne Palmer; two (2) uncles: Jason Palmer and Willie Melvin Palmer; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His joy was reminiscing over the many experiences and delights while living and working in Edwards, His love for Alcorn State University was always exemplified. He loved his church, Hill of Zion and aspired to see the new edifice reconstructed. Due to his disability, he was not as active in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
He was cared for by a special Caregiver for twenty-six (26) plus years by his wife, Belinda Palmer. She fulfilled her Christian and Godly duties – “Through sickness and Health, until Death Do Us Part!”
He enjoyed sports and conversating with many friends, such as, Moncure, Roosevelt, Tommie, Dr. Bolls, Eddie James, a special cousin, Willie James Taylor, former JSU co-workers and many more.
He had grown weary and weak, but he kept his determination to “run on till the end.”
His life stands as a true legacy of a life dedicated to God, through helping others. He extended kindness in deeds to everyone. He would give his last and he never met a stranger.
